30 SEPTEMBER 2026

Vini

Twenty six today. Built for you from 845 miles away, so take your time with it.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

You are twenty-six today, and I am 845 miles away, which is rude of geography.

So I built you somewhere to stand for a bit. There's a countdown, a film argument, twenty-six candles, and a letter at the bottom that I mean every word of. Scroll slowly.

RIGHT NOW

Same minute, different window.

We got lucky with the time zone. No maths, no "wait, is it tomorrow for you." When I check the clock and think about you, you're in the exact same minute I am. 845 miles is just a lot of road between two identical clocks, and I've already crossed an ocean for you once, so honestly, roads are nothing.

Then the miles run out.

Until I land in Boston. I've checked this number an unreasonable number of times. It keeps going down, which is the single best feature of time.

And for the record, it's been ... days since 20 April 2024.

HOW WE GOT HERE

The short version, which is not short.

20 APRIL 2024

The day we met

I did not know, standing there, that I was about to rearrange my entire life around one person. In my defence, nobody tells you. There's no announcement.

LATER THAT YEAR

You left

Abroad, for your studies. New country, new everything, and a very large amount of ocean where you used to be.

3 AUGUST 2025

Charlotte, North Carolina

I followed you across the world and turned up at your college. I said it was about the degree. It was not about the degree. And then we met again like it was the most ordinary thing, which it absolutely was not.

Us under the trees
Green everywhere. Your colour, obviously.
THE MONTHS AFTER

Friends, allegedly

For a while we were "just friends." Nobody believed us. I'm not sure we believed us. Then it stopped being slow and started being the best thing in my week.

Us in the car, being ridiculous
Exhibit A: extremely serious, very platonic behaviour.
SOMEWHERE IN THERE

I knew

Not "this is nice." Not "let's see where it goes." I mean the whole thing. The rest of my life, you in it, permanently, non-negotiable. It arrived on an ordinary evening with no ceremony at all, and it hasn't moved since.

30 SEPTEMBER 2026, TODAY

Twenty-six

845 miles apart and still the best part of my day, every day, without exception.

TAP EACH ONE

Five things that mean nothing to anyone else.

Say something the way we actually say things:

SETTLING THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL

Tonight's film.

Two people. Completely incompatible taste. One screen.
TWENTY-SIX OF THEM

Light them all. I'll wait.

LAST THING

I wrote you something.

You don't have to read it now. But read it at some point today, when it's quiet.

Vini,

Happy birthday. Twenty-six looks completely unfair on you.

I've tried to write this four ways and it keeps coming out the same, so here it is plainly. Meeting you on the 20th of April, 2024 is the best accident of my life, and everything since has been me quietly making sure it stopped being an accident. I crossed an ocean and turned up at your college and told everyone it was about the course. It was about you. It was always about you.

You're 845 miles away tonight and I hate it, and also it doesn't frighten me even slightly, because I've already done the harder version of this. I've missed you across a whole ocean and still found my way to you. Boston is nothing. Boston is a flight on the 7th.

So today: eat something excellent. Not the egg rice balls. Let somebody else cook. Pick the darkest, rainiest, most miserable film you can find and I'll sit through the whole thing complaining, which you enjoy far more than you admit.

And know this, on your birthday, in writing, somewhere you can come back to whenever you need it: I'm not going anywhere. I decided that a long time ago, not on some grand day, just quietly, in the middle of an ordinary evening with you. The rest of my life. That one. I've never been more sure of anything.

Happy birthday, Vini. I love you.

Yours, always.
